Dear Senator,
With this e-mail I wish to urge you to vote NO on HB 47, the ELIZABETH WHITEFIELD END-OF-LIFE OPTIONS ACT.  As you know, our Catholic faith has the deepest respect for human life from conception to natural death.  For over two millennia we have been accompanying people in their final days and we know full well how difficult this time can be.  However, these challenges do not lessen our belief that human life is sacred, a gift from God.  Only God can give life and only God can decide when that life will be transformed into eternal life.  None of us, including the State of New Mexico as a juridic person, can attempt to stand in for what properly belongs to God.  There are certainly many who have voiced how difficult the dying process can be but the solution is not suicide.  The solution is to live these final moments in faith, trusting that they are filled with hope, conversion and a deepening of love.  To cut this time short is to close ourselves to these graces.  Even for those who do not believe in God, these final moments of life can be very precious and offer an opportunity for reconciliation and a deeper awareness of the gift of the life that is coming to a natural end.  Medical science can help to alleviate the pain and discomfort that often accompanies the dying process.  If this bill passes, it will be a sad day for all of us in New Mexico, a diminishment of the value we place on human life and a boon for the insurance companies.  Please vote NO on HB 47.  Thank you.
